Word work Adverbs
Adverbs tell us how something happens.
F.e She speaks clearly.
We form most adverbs by adding –ly to the adjective:
Clear-clearly, quick-quickly, sudden- suddenly
Some adverbs don’t follow this rule:
Good-well, fast-fast, early-early, late-late
Adjectives ending in –y: Angry-angrily, happy-happily
Adjectives ending in –l; Careful –carefully successful – successfully

Listening the text
Tips for visitors to Thailand
Thailand is famous for hospitality, and the average visitor will have no difficulty in adapting to local customs. The following tips are mostly common sense, but to avoid giving offence foreign visitors may find them useful.
a. When addressing a Thai person it is polite to use just their first name
b. In more formal situations you should use the word ‘Khun’. This is like ‘Mr’ and is used for addressing both men and women.
c. It is not usual to shake hands when you meet a Thai person-instead you do a wai – you put your hands together as if you are saying a prayer, and bow your head slightly. You should always do this when you meat older people.
d. Couples should be careful how they behave. Thai couples tend not to hold hands in public and it is acceptable for couples to kiss in public.
e. The head is very important in Thai culture. It is not respectful to touch another person’s head.
f. Remember, if you are invited to someone’s home it is important to take your shoes off.
g. In Thailand, people tend to serve food in large bowls in the centre of the table. Everyone helps themselves, using chopsticks.
Finally remember that is very important to show respect to the Thai royal family. Thai people always do this, and expect visitors to do the same.
Everyday life in America
America is a friendly country with friendly people. In small American towns you hear "hello" from friends and also from people who have just arrived.
a. People easily start to talk with each other. Waiters¹ in restaurants will often tell you their names and talk to you. When you leave they will tell out to "Take care" or " Have a nice day!" Often people you have just met begin to ask you personal questions or start telling you all about themselves.
b. When Americans meet people for the first time they usually shake hands. When they meet friends or relatives they haven’t seen for a long time they sometimes kiss them on the cheek.
c. “Pot luck” dinners are very popular with Americans. At a “pot luck” dinner all the guests bring something to eat and usually ask the host or hostess what they would like. Often you bring some salad, some vegetables, or something sweet. Usually guests will arrive 10 or 15 minutes late – this gives your hosts time to finish their preparations.
d. Americans love to get together and to have parties. Traditional parties are birthdays, moving to a new house, a wedding, New Year’s Eve and Fourth of July – Independence Day. These Parties are often informal and there are not many rules for them.
Americans like to relax and enjoy themselves. So, may be the best advice is to relax, smile, and enjoy yourself too!
