The aim of the lesson:
- to speak about sightseeing, government and culture Great Britain and Northern Ireland.
- to bring up pupils to respect the culture of other countries and to love their motherland.
- to develop students’ abilities in speaking, reading and listening skills.
The form of the lesson: traditional lesson.
The type of the lesson: self-government lesson.
Methods of the teaching: explanation, formulation questions for other, work with pictures, demonstration and exercises.

Visual aids: (mechanical) active board, slides, pictures, balloons and cards.

IV. Introduction of new material
Student 1:
The Union Jack
This is the popular name given to the flag of GB. It is called the Union Flag and it’s a mixture of several flags:
 The red cross of St.George , for England, on a while ground
 The white diagonal cross of St.Andrew, for Scotland, on a blue ground
 The red diagonal cross of St.Patrick, for Ireland, on a white ground
King James the III ordered that the Union Flag should be flown on the main mast off all British ships, except on ship of war. Here the flag was flown at the front of the ships, on what was called the Jack star and so we get the name of Union Jack. A “jack”, by the way, is an old word for the sailor. Union Jack is also on the flag of Australia and New Zealand.

The United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland
It situated in the north-west coast of Europe between the Atlantic Ocean on the north, north-west and north-west and North Sea on the East. The UK includes England, Scotland, Wales and North Ireland. Although Britain is a unitary state, but they have separate national identities, cultures and traditions/
The area of UK is 243610 sq.km
Its population is 63 million.
Ben Nevis (1343m) is highest mountain in Scotland; Snowdon (1085m) is highest mountain in Wales.
GB isn’t rich in natural resources. Coal, natural gas and oil are most of them. British grew wheat, oats and potatoes. Sheep can be seen in many parts of England and Scotland.

The House of Parliament
Student 8:
Big Ben
It is in the Clock Tower of the House of Parliament. The Clock Tower is 348 feet high. You can hear the sound of Big Ben every hour in London. The Clock and bell go their names after sir Benjamin Hall. He was a tall man, whose nickname was Big Ben. So people know the clock as Big Ben.
Student 9:
Buckingham palace
It has serve as the official London residence of Britain’s sovereigns since 1837. Today it is the Queen’s official residence. The state Rooms of the Palace are open to visitors in August and September.

Stonehenge
About 4600 years ago – or maybe more – the Stone Age inhabitants of Britain started building an enormous stone structure. This structure is now called Stonehenge and it is in South of England.
The largest stones weight 50 tons and the smallest weight 5 tons. The people who started Stonehenge were primate. They used no metal.
Student 11:
Oxford
The oldest university situated in the town of Oxford in England. As a centre of learning it was established in the 12th century. It is an aristocratic university. Oxford’s motto is “The Lord is my Light”.
The university is made up from a variety of institutions, including 38 constituent colleges and a full range of academic departments which are organized in to four Divisions.
